Thanks for sharing this, and unusually I listened to the whole debate.! The stand out Q from the audience was the one about “taking the Mickey” out of each other’s religion in Tanzania. It reminded me of what happened here 30/40 years ago before we started drifting into a semi-totalitarian state.
I have really enjoyed the debate, thoughtful, and measured.
I was however surprised that none of the panelists raised the issue of where mass immigration started.
To my understanding the incoming Blair Government did this deliberately, I’d be pleased if more educated commentators than I were able to explain.
Blair is often quoted as saying “We are going to rub the noses of the right in diversity”.
Equally, some of his aids are on record as “We went out looking for them”.
It’s my belief that the rot set in there.
Tony Blair changed so much of the underlying machinery of government, as only a lawyer could, and removed power from Parliament to QUANGO’s and NGO’s that don’t seem to be accountable to the people- through Parliament and their MP.
It’s my belief that Joe Public has finally had enough, and lower down the road than this excellent discussion, on street corners, pubs, sports clubs where ordinary people gather trouble is brewing.
The basis of the entire rumination is “ Nobody asked us”.
Everywhere you see this, nobody asked me to vote for this, I didn’t want this but they did anyway, I voted against this but “they” did it anyway.
This is not government of the people, for the people, to borrow a phrase from our American cousins.
I voted Labour many years ago,I have watched the party of Attlee and Bevin sink into an unpatriotic self indulgent cult .The party I assume you belong to Paul is institutionally incapable of absorbing the important message in your speech.
