A few weeks ago I was travelling on the London underground. It wasn’t a new experience for me. Having grown up in Dagenham – a short walk from Becontree station – and worked in central London for most of my life, I have been hopping on and off tube trains for about as long as I can remember.
On this particular day, I was travelling from Whitechapel to Liverpool Street. I took a call on my mobile phone just as I had entered Whitechapel station, and so hung around at surface level to ensure the signal didn’t break up.
