As I write, the US presidential election looks certain to result in a Trump victory. And, more than usual, the outcome is likely to have profound implications, particularly on the international stage. Though most of us didn’t have a vote in the contest, we most definitely all have a stake in what happens next.

Once upon a time, I would have had no difficulty in declaring a wish for a Democrat success. Give me the party of JFK, RFK, Carter and Obama over that of Nixon, Ford, Reagan and ‘Dubya’ any day.

Yet there is barely a part of me that will bemoan their defeat this time.
