Why I defend those calling for the Lucy Letby case to be reopened
Painful though it may be for some, we must resist attempts to shut down debate over the ‘killer’ nurse’s conviction
To assert publicly that a person whom a court of law has determined to be a mass murderer, and many of one’s fellow citizens consider to be the embodiment of pure evil, may not in fact be guilty of the crimes of which she has been convicted is not an easy thing to do.
That is especially so when the apparent victims of the sinner’s misdeeds were sick infants. Understandably, emotions run high on such matters, and many with confidence in the jury’s verdict will question the virtue of any attempt to re-examine the matter – perhaps, too, the motives of those seeking to do so. One must always therefore tread carefully when suggesting that the jury may have got it wrong in such a case.
